Why Do Blind Box Figures Fade? Sunlight, Dust and Humidity

Separate real risks from collector myths: sunlight, dust, and humidity affect PVC blind box figures differently. Here's what actually damages them and what you can skip.
Quick answer
Yes, blind box figures can fade, but sunlight is the main driver, not dust or normal indoor humidity. UV light breaks down the pigments in PVC over months or years, while dust mostly dulls the surface and humidity mainly threatens metal parts, adhesives, and ceramic finishes. Keep your figures out of direct sun, dust them gently, and store them somewhere stable rather than chasing every care myth you see online.
How sunlight actually fades a blind box figure
UV radiation in direct sunlight is the biggest cause of figure discoloration. It attacks the colorants in PVC and causes the plastic itself to yellow over time. This happens gradually, so a figure on a sunny windowsill might look fine for a season and then shift noticeably. The fix is simple: move your display away from windows or use a shelf that only gets indirect light. If you want to keep a favorite piece near a window, rotate it out every few weeks so no single figure takes the full dose.
Dust, humidity, and other fading claims worth checking
Dust does not fade a figure, but it can look like it has. A layer of dust scatters light and makes colors appear muted, and wiping it with a dry cloth can grind particles into the surface. Use a soft brush or a gentle puff of air instead. Normal indoor humidity is rarely a fading risk on its own, but it can loosen adhesives, tarnish metal pins, and affect ceramic pieces that have printed designs. If you live somewhere very damp, a sealed storage bin with a silica packet does more than any spray-on product.
What to do instead of guessing
Start by checking where your collection sits. A shelf away from windows, air vents, and radiators covers most of the risk. For pieces you are not displaying, keep them in their original boxes or a lidded container. When you handle figures, wash your hands first, because oils and sunscreen transfer to PVC and can attract dust. None of this requires special equipment. The main thing is consistency: a quick dust every month and a seasonal check for sun exposure will keep most blind box figures looking close to how they arrived.
Verdicts on common figure fading claims
- Sunlight fades figures: True. UV light is the primary cause of pigment breakdown and yellowing in PVC. Direct sun is the worst case, but long-term bright indirect light adds up. Verdict: real risk. Move displays out of direct sun.
- Dust causes fading: False. Dust does not fade color, but it dulls the surface and can scratch if wiped dry. A soft brush is safer than a cloth. Verdict: myth, but dust still needs gentle removal.
- Humidity ruins every figure: Overstated. Normal indoor humidity is not a fading threat, but damp conditions can weaken adhesives and affect metal or ceramic parts over time. Verdict: partial. Control damp storage, not your whole room.
- You need special sprays to prevent yellowing: Not supported. Shade, stable storage, and clean handling do more than coatings, which can leave residue or react with PVC. Verdict: skip it. Simple habits work better.
Figure care in practice
- Tears of Themis Cozy Time Stacking Mini Figures Blind Box | miHoYo Official: Tears of Themis Cozy Time Stacking Mini Figures are stackable chibi PVC figures from miHoYo Official. Stacking exposes more surface area to light and dust, so rotate or cover stacked sets if they sit near a window.
- Chiikawa Ochoko Sake Cup Vol.2 Ceramic Mini Cup Figure Parade Official: Chiikawa Ochoko Sake Cup Vol.2 is a ceramic mini cup series with printed character designs. Ceramic holds up to light better than PVC, but printed designs can still dull, and the cup shape means dust settles inside.
- Disney Zootopia Mini Figure Pendant Blind Box Jandoon US Seller: Disney Zootopia Mini Figure Pendant Blind Box contains mini PVC pendants, with 12 designs total (10 regular plus 2 secret). Pendants get handled and worn, so skin oils and friction matter more than shelf fading for these pieces.
